> VOICES BEHIND BARS

(A Short Story by Midfield Voice)

They call him Silas, but in here, names don’t matter much. Only numbers, and silence.

In his first month, he barely spoke. Not because he couldn’t—but because hope had left him. They say time heals wounds. But in a concrete cell, time is just a wound that never closes.

Silas once taught mathematics in a local school. A moment of rage, a fatal accident, and just like that—his world collapsed.

“You’re not your mistake,” Mr. Yusuf always told them in class. He ran the Reform & Reclaim Initiative, a rehabilitation program inside the prison. Art therapy, book clubs, even tailoring workshops.

“You’re not your mistake.”

Silas thought it was nonsense—until one day, he picked up a paintbrush.

What started as strokes of anger turned into stories of hope.

He painted freedom.

He painted forgiveness.

He painted a boy sitting under a mango tree, reading—just like his son used to do.

Word spread. His art was displayed at a public exhibit. A visiting NGO bought one.

The first time he smiled in years was not at the money… but the note attached:

“You gave us beauty from brokenness. Thank you.

Silas still serves his time.

But now, he teaches younger inmates. Not just art—but "Grace".

He once lost his voice in the shadows.

Now, his colors speak louder than chains.
